According to a new study from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a pill could make gastric bypass surgery a thing of the past.

Conducted by the Brigham Research Institute at BWH, the team developed a substance that temporarily coats the intestines, allowing for nutrients to pass through the body without absorbing.

Since the substance provides a slick surface on the intestine, the pill helps to regulate blood sugar levels because food doesn't fully digest.

Jeff Karp, who worked on the study, told Digital Trends that their pill mimics the effects of gastric bypass procedures with a safe gut-coating material.

Although they've only tested the substance in rodents, the researchers are looking forward to conducting clinical trials next year.
