While the US General Election of 2016 was notable in many ways, the lead-up was just as dramatic. For the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton managed to knock out all of her rival would-be nominees apart from one – Bernie Sanders – who remained her most popular rival. In the end, Clinton won the nomination, and lost the final vote to be President – but Sanders is keen to give a shot at the top job another go.

Leading the way as a figure representing the populist vote in 2016, Sanders has joined the growing list of Democrat hopefuls who will be seeking the opportunity to go head-to-head against Donald Trump in next year’s race. Many were surprised at the momentum of Sanders’ initial campaign, and with the Vermont senator having remained politically active and outspoken during the formative years of President Trump, the politician will be heading back to tour the states in the hope of gaining Democrat approval.

“Our campaign is about creating a government and economy that works for the many, not just the few,” Sanders reportedly stated in an email to his supporters, as confirmed by Reuters. The candidate gained popularity in 2016’s GE as he emerged as a popular figure for left-leaning and liberal voters. In a voting landscape that has often favored right-wing politics, to say Sanders’ campaign was seen as an underdog mission is perhaps putting things mildly. However, the senator went on to win 23 state nomination contests across the country. That, at least, led many to be inspired to follow Sanders further after the campaigns had finished.

“We are running against a President who is a pathological liar, a fraud, a sexist, a xenophobe and someone who is undermining American democracy as he leads us in an authoritarian direction,” Sanders has said of Trump in recent times. He has also referred to Trump, rather unflatteringly, as ‘the most dangerous President in modern American history’.

However, despite Sanders’ noted popularity with young voters and left-leaning US citizens, he will not be alone in seeking the Democratic nomination. With a number of progressive voices joining the senator on the field, it will remain to be seen quite how well he performs at competitions this time around. With former Vice President Joe Biden rumored to be preparing for a potential bid, it seems that the race will be a tight one. With more liberal voices on the field than ever before, who will go toe-to-toe with Trump next year?
