November has well and truly rolled around, which means it’s time to start thinking about Christmas – too soon? November 5th, 1605 – The Gunpowder Plot
Of course – the day Guy Fawkes and his conspirators attempted to blow up British Parliament and then-monarch King James I. Since then, centuries after Fawkes was executed, millions celebrate the occasion on November 5th every year with bonfires and fireworks. It’s a funny old world…

November 6th, 1975 – The Sex Pistols Debut
For just a few short years, they would revolutionize British popular music – and on this day back in 1975, Johnny Rotten and the Sex Pistols would perform their anarchic catalogue of tunes for the first time at St Martins College in London.

November 7th, 1874 – Republican Pastiche Turned Symbol?
It’s been a custom for decades that the Republican Party be depicted in US political cartoons as an elephant – and that practice in fact dates all the way back to 1874, with Thomas Nast having published the first lampoon of its kind on this day.

November 8th, 2016 – Donald Trump Elected US President
It’s hard to believe, but it’s already been two years since US President Donald Trump won his fateful general election against Hillary Clinton, taking the Republican Party back to the White House.

November 9th, 1984 – ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ Debuts
Wes Craven’s now cult classic horror movie – which made a pop icon out of the psychotic killer Freddy Krueger – debuted on the big screen 34 years ago today.

November 10th, 1969 – ‘Sesame Street’ Premieres on PBS
It’s hard to believe that Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch and Cookie Monster have been with us almost 50 years – but they really have! Surely by now everyone knows the way to Sesame Street – no matter what the theme tune would have you believe!

November 11th, 1918 – The End of World War I
At 11am on November 11th, the world remembers those who fought for us in the Great War. On this day 100 years ago, an official armistice to end war between the Allies and Germany was signed.
