The Week in News: September 1st - September 7th

September 8, 2018

Here comes September – and the final third of 2018. It’s been a fairly bizarre year so far to say the least – but if 2016 and 2017 were anything to go by, we haven’t seen anything yet. If you’ve been too busy to digest the news lately or want to take time out to enjoy a capsule of sorts to celebrate the news of the past week, now’s your chance – here are some of the biggest stories from the last seven days, showing what we’ve learned since the last time we were here.

Burt Reynolds Passes Away
Legendary actor Burt Reynolds sadly passed away this week following heart failure at the age of 82. The star, best known for leading roles in the likes of Smokey and The Bandit, Boogie Nights and Deliverance, leaves behind a unique legacy – one which was only ever honored with a single Oscar nomination – and one which deserves a serious rewatch. Was there anyone else who could work a moustache the way Burt Reynolds could? Likely not – and he will be missed.

Trump Faces a White House Ghost
Donald Trump’s visit to the headlines this week involved his public anger against an anonymous opinion writer, who took to the New York Times to suggest that there is a cell of people within the President’s circle who are actively pushing against much of his motions. The President, of course, took to Twitter – and to a podium – to voice his concerns – and it seems that there is now a hunt on for a mole in the White House. Is there a week that goes by without big news from the top of US politics?

Amazon Breaks the Trillion Dollar Barrier
Move aside, Apple – Amazon’s right up close behind you. Jeff Bezos’ firm this week passed the $1 trillion value mark on the stock exchange, a landmark moment for the firm and for US business in general. Amazon’s rise to wealth has been a steady one – albeit one which seems to continue undergoing certain controversy with regard to complaints over workers’ rights.

Twitter Bans Alex Jones
Fans of InfoWars had something new to be angry about this week as their controversial mouthpiece – the outspoken Alex Jones – found himself and his brand effectively banned from Twitter, considerable time after other platforms moved to remove the broadcaster from the web (Google and Facebook among them). The reason for Twitter’s ban? He breached terms and conditions with regard to offensive communications – and as a result, it now seems fans will only be able to see what Jones is up to via his website.
