The Week in News: April 7th - April 13th

April 15, 2018
by Graham Pierrepoint -

On the back of a week full of April Fools jokes comes a week full of news stories that many hoped were continuations of the fun – it has, however, been a week full of controversy and rather frightening moments. Beyond this, however, there are still some silver linings to be spotted in every cloud – and we’re here to line up all of the week’s most important news for you in one simple digest.

The Syria Problem
The news has inarguably been dominated this week by news that the US and the UK appear to intend to take action against Syria following a large-scale gas attack on its civilians. It is also the latest in a long line of dramatic stories involving Russia and Vladimir Putin, as the Russian state advised the US that they would directly retaliate against any air strikes made against Syria. US President Donald Trump’s response was that action would be taken – and it seems that UK leader Theresa May is among others who are offering physical support. It is not yet clear quite where any of this will lead.

Editor's Note: Since the time of writing, U.S., British and French forces have struck Syria with a coordinated missile attack.

Trump’s Lawyer Probe
Donald Trump has made it particularly clear this week that he has found an investigation into his attorney, Michael Cohen, particularly distasteful. The FBI probe into Cohen comes just days after Trump stated that he had no knowledge of his lawyer having paid $130,000 in hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels – though it remains unclear quite where the results of the probe will head, the President is less than thrilled that it happened at all.

Comey on the Book Trail
On the subject of the FBI, former head James Comey, sacked by Donald Trump, is making headlines of his own as he begins to promote his memoir – which could blow open more stories about the truth behind the White House doors. President Trump is, thus far, claiming stories Comey is putting forward to be false.

Mark Zuckerberg Testifies
In a move to try and get Facebook back on solid ground again after the data sharing scandal continues to simmer, the platform’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, appeared before Congress this week to answer questions about the social network and the recent data problems that emerged. Many people commenting in the media were concerned that he wasn’t given much in the way of ‘hardball’ questions or issues to address.

Pink Chocolate is Here!
Some good news at last! The UK celebrates the arrival of ruby chocolate on its shelves this week as, for the first time in decades, a new variety of the sweet treat is available to try in the form of a four-finger Kit-Kat. For those of you outside of the UK, that’s a wafered biscuit covered in chocolate – in this case, pink choc!
