Ever Misplaced Where You’ve Parked Your Car? Ever Lost It for Twenty Years?

It’s a problem many motorists have surely faced – how easy is it to park somewhere, only to completely forget where you’ve left your car? This is especially easy if you’ve parked in, say, a multi-storey car park or somewhere with allocated zones – but many of us have problems with even finding our vehicles in wide open spaces! In a twist of fate that seems almost ready for the big screen – though perhaps not quite along the same lines as, say, Dude, Where’s My Car – one man in Germany found a car he thought he’d seen the last of back in 1997 – thinking he had completely lost it.

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility to lose track of a prized possession only for it to pop up again years later – but a car? The man – who remains anonymous at the time of writing – reportedly advised the police that the Volkswagen Passat was suspected stolen – it was, however, nestled away completely out of sight. It was picked up as an industrial garage in Frankfurt was undergoing demolition – and luckily, the man’s car was saved from near destruction.

It’s thought that the 76-year-old driver was taken to the site of the car’s finding – however, delight may well have turned to dismay as it transpired that the car would no longer start. Perhaps with good reason – would you want to start up and run again if you’d been left in a public garage for 20 years? “The car can no longer be driven and will be sent to the scrap heap,” authorities confirmed – meaning that the muddled motorist’s reunion with his Passat was sadly short-lived, though it at least solved a mystery of epic proportions that had been two decades in the making.

It seems that the relevant authorities were able to source the owner of the car fairly easily once it was discovered that a car was getting in the way of demolition – though searching from the other way around clearly took far longer than it ought to! As the nameless driver finds himself the proud owner of two decades’ worth of forgotten scrap metal, it just goes to show that you’re by no means alone if you can’t find where you parked – but if you want to make sure you can drive it when you finally pick it up again, don’t leave it for twenty years!
