Residents of two Houston-area cities were told to stay indoors and schools in six communities were closed on Thursday due to air pollution by a cancer-causing chemical after a petrochemical plant fire.

A fire at a petrochemicals plant spread to eight storage tanks on March 18, causing a large plume of dark smoke to appear over Houston, Texas, local media reported.The fire at the Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) prompted schools in the Deer Park area to close on Monday; however, air quality readings conducted in response to the incident did not exceed action levels, the City of Deer Park Office of Emergency Management said.Fire crews were reported to be working to reduce the risk of an explosion, which was described as β€œminimal” by ITC.
