2020 is inching ever closer, and this of course means that the field of potential Presidential candidates for the Democratic Party is starting to fill out. With strong names in Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders all having thrown their hats in the ring thus far, it won’t be long before we see our final Democrat line-up for the nomination knockouts. A rising star in Democrat politics – one who has already earned a popular name for himself – is Beto O’Rourke. This week, he announced that he, too, would be running for the Presidential nomination.

O’Rourke u-turned on his decision with regard to the Presidency this week having previously hinted that he would be giving the nomination race a miss. He is perhaps best known for building a steady campaign against Republican Ted Cruz in a bid to become senator for Texas in recent years. While O’Rourke was ultimately unsuccessful in those endeavors, he has nevertheless continued to press on with his political career – gaining more than a few fans in the process.

According to CNN, O’Rourke’s main political concerns surround those of climate change and healthcare. Regarded by some media outlets as the ‘wildcard’ candidate, the politician took steps to outline his plans for fighting against the rise of changes in our climate. He also took what has been referred to as a measured approach with regard to ongoing healthcare concerns. His proposed model, it appears, will be to offer a balanced approach.

While nomination opposition in those such as Senator Sanders believe in a flat healthcare system for all, O’Rourke has instead suggested that while he supports the growth of Medicare, he wouldn’t consider dismantling private healthcare. His plans would entail broadening Medicare’s current scope and to allow American citizens to ultimately choose between a national system and those supported on a private basis by their employers.

“I’m convinced we’ll have to work from as much common ground as possible,” O’Rourke recently advised. “No one person, perhaps no one party, can force the decision on this. This has to be something America comes together on.”

Healthcare in the US continues to be a feverish political topic. Many people supported Obamacare, while others lost out on its reported benefits. Could an O’Rourke system be appealing enough for the politician to take on Trump in 2020? Let’s wait and see.
