The ‘alt-right’ has emerged largely as a result of politicians such as Donald Trump emerging as popular figureheads in US politics – and with it, several commentators and personalities have been using the mainstream media and Twitter alike to communicate their own politics and twists on what’s been occurring in the outside world. To many left of the right wing, their emergence has been either an annoyance or a concern – however, a major alt-right commentator has recently been outed as an outright troll – thanks to a report into potential Russian interference during last year’s US general election.
It’s been reported by the Daily Beast that Jenna Abrams – who, at last count, had over 70,000 Twitter followers – is in fact an account that was created back in 2014, largely becoming more and more political in the run-up to last year’s big election – and that it was the Internet Research Agency, based in St Petersburg, who was responsible. Abrams’ tweets have picked up controversy and division as well as extreme agreement online and in the mainstream media over the past year or so, particularly with Twitter becoming more and more the platform to flock to for political discourse. This has never been truer thanks to President Trump using the service to advise of his own thoughts and positions on various world events. Even the mainstream media are tuning into the little blue bird to find out what’s happening in the world – as social media evolves slowly into the place to discuss matters.
Abrams’ outing has resulted in account suspension and further concerns being raised as to the true nature behind the so-called Russian ‘troll farm’ – and just how deep the rabbit hole goes. The ongoing investigation into alleged Russian interference behind the scenes of the US election continues – and the emergence of this popular alt-right mouthpiece being a fake is only adding to the controversy and the fascination that lies behind the allegations.
It’s thought that, as the rabbit hole goes deeper, more details will emerge in the coming weeks and even those close to Trump could be implicated – as the FBI continues to research the links that supposedly exist. It’s shaping up to be an incredibly dramatic year for US politics – and, as a result, for the world at large. Where will it all end – and what could happen next?
