`YouTube has long since been a bastion of entertainment for the modern age. The video-sharing platform has evolved massively since its infancy in 2005, having made millionaires of multiple young people creating and hosting their own shows and skits online. Video sharing has taken over traditional social media too, to a certain extent, though the Google-owned brand has continued to reign as the number one source for gameplay videos, reactions, short skits, makeup tutorials and everything in between. Even for older generations, the platform remains hard to beat for what’s on offer.

However, the website has just had a new record broken. Previously, the most ‘disliked’ video on YouTube was the official music video for Justin Bieber’s hit song ‘Baby’. However, with over 10 million dislikes at the time of writing, it is YouTube’s own ‘Rewind 2018’ which appears to have taken over as the most hated video available on the platform to date. But why is this? According to The Verge, it has taken the video just over a week to topple Bieber’s infamous record.

YouTube have led with a look back at their most popular videos over the past twelve months for some time now. This year’s Rewind compilation, a creative collaboration of stars from the platform that YouTube believe to be representative of video sharing culture, appears to have rubbed a number of viewers up the wrong way – as well as some creators.

YouTube Rewind has been a staple of December uploads since 2011, and in that time, it has gained infamy among certain YouTubers and viewers as being fairly excluding, it is claimed, to certain creators. There appears to be an ongoing disparity between what YouTube sees as highlights, and what its creators and viewers feel to be otherwise.

In an official statement to The Verge, YouTube confirmed that ‘dethroning ‘Baby’ in dislikes wasn’t exactly (their) goal’. “Trying to capture the magic of YouTube in one single video is like trying to capture lightning in a bottle,” they continued. “We also learned that creating content can be really hard and this underscores our respect and admiration for YouTube creators doing it every day. Keep the feedback coming and maybe we’ll release a top 10 list of ‘Rewind dislike’ reaction videos.”

There continues to be strain, it appears, in the YouTube community – what will this new compilation bring to the table for 2019? We will have to wait and see.
