There was an occasional exception, like Gandhi’s use of nonviolent protest to gain India’s independence, but people wrote that off as being due to the fact that the British Empire, being ruled by a democratic government, was too soft. Tell that to the descendants of the tens of thousands of Irish, Kenyans, Malaysians, Yemenis, Iraqis, Egyptians, Afrikaners and sundry others who were killed for trying to leave the British Empire.
