Many would have thought that Frozen – which, despite having been released in 2013, continues to rampage through winter merchandising sales like almost no other animated property – could do no wrong. Disney’s chilly epic is considered one of the finest animated movies to ever hit the big screen by millions of fans worldwide – with the film’s soundtrack likely helping to boost its popularity. However, there is of course going to be a tangent of people that disagree – a tale of two sisters separated by one’s magical powers isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea – though according to recent reports, it seems that even ardent Disney fans aren’t too pleased about the latest Frozen short, which recently aired in cinemas across the US. The reason? It weighs in at around 20 minutes long!
Coco is the latest Pixar movie to hit theaters, having debuted during Thanksgiving and having received critical praise from advance screenings and target viewers alike. However, it seems that many moviegoers expecting to settle in to watch the studio’s latest epic – this time focused on the concept and tradition of Dia de Muertos – were met with a whole other movie to sit through beforehand. Cue Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, a 21-minute ‘short’ film that has generated ire across Twitter and has reportedly confused several moviegoers expecting to see Coco – and not another adventure with Josh Gad’s affable snowman.
Pixar has traditionally bumpered their movies with celebrated shorts such as Geri’s Game, For The Birds and Lifted – yet on this occasion, more than a few Pixar enthusiasts were left feeling more than a little disappointed by having to sit through a 20-minute Frozen short – short in relative terms, at least. Some complained that Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was simply too long to bumper the main feature – leaving many disappointed that they had to wait an extended period following trailers and commercials to see Coco. It’s gotten to the point where guides have been published online advising on how to avoid Olaf altogether if you’re off to see Coco – with one Mexican cinema chain removing the new movie from the start of Coco altogether.
Frozen does still have its fans and many people will be happy to see further adventures of Olaf bolster Pixar’s latest output – but for those keen to get to the main feature, a 21-minute featurette is a little hard to swallow.
