Disney has been taking to remaking their most popular and beloved animated movies for some time now, and next up on the slate to hit the big screen are Aladdin, The Lion King and Dumbo, all of which have been thoroughly teased, some with more trailer content than others. In the case of Aladdin, recent teaser images of the main cast have been unveiled to the public – and, as always, opinion has run rife on social media. As always, too, there seems to be split opinion with regard to a beloved character – in this case, the Genie, who was brought to life by the late, great Robin Williams. According to NME, Will Smith has made assurances that his live action reimagining of the character will remain faithful to his original depiction in animation.

The main issue that fans appear to have taken with the characterization of the Genie in the new Aladdin movie revolves around the fact that he doesn’t appear to be blue. The original genie’s striking blue hue was one of his defining features – which is why many people have spoken out against what appeared to be a decision to remove the blueness completely. However, Smith appears to have taken such concerns into his own hands, once again via social media.

“YES, I’m gonna be blue!” Smith confirmed excitedly on Instagram, stating that the look first revealed in Entertainment Weekly in the US offered a glimpse at the character’s ‘human form’. “This is how the Genie is in Human / Disguise form. My character will be CGI most of the movie.”

It is interesting that Disney is choosing to offer a keen balance between CGI and live action for its more outlandish properties. Aladdin and The Lion King appear to be particularly reliant on such technology for obvious reasons, following in the footsteps of successful remakes past such as The Jungle Book. This current trend of Disney remakes has drawn criticism and acclaim from a variety of parties, though so far, the movies have been performing well at the box office and with a variety of experts.

Aladdin is due for release in around six months’ time, set to arrive in theaters towards the end of 2019. Will the drama surrounding Genie’s depiction have simmered down by then? Will the quality of the movie erase any controversy? Let’s wait and see.
