Didn’t they already reboot Robocop? They certainly did – back in 2014 – but in true Spider-Man fashion, it seems there’s no time like the present when it comes to reinventing a reinvention – and while Robocop may well be one of the more iconic movies of the 80s, it seems there must be a market that’s baying to see the cyborg lawmaker take down no-good criminals in 2018. At least, that’s what Neill Blomkamp seems to understand.
Blomkamp has picked up a script penned by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, reported in some outlets to be known as ‘Robocop Returns’ at this point in time – and he may well be the right fit for the director’s chair. The director famously helmed cult classics District 9 and Chappie – both downright bizarre and both combining sci-fi with strong currents of social commentary – meaning it will be interesting to see what his take is on another reboot of the crime-fighting mechanoid.
Will Robocop’s classic look be revamped or rebooted? Will we have to completely ignore the 2014 relaunch? Blomkamp has suggested in conversation that it may well be sequel, in fact – but regardless, it’s interesting to see yet another big title from the 80s get a remake treatment – though there’s perhaps never been a better time to introduce the current moviegoing generation to the character.
“The original definitely had a massive effect on me as a kid,” Blomkamp detailed to Deadline. “I loved it then and it remains a classic in the end of 20th Century sci-fi catalog, with real meaning under the surface. Hopefully that is something we can get closer to in making of a sequel. That is my goal here. What I connected to as a kid has evolved over time. At first, the consumerism, materialism and Reaganomics, that 80s theme of America on steroids, came through most strongly. Bust as I’ve gotten older, the part that really resonated with me is identity, and the search for identity.”
“As long as the human component is there, a good story can work in any time period, it’s not locked into a specific place in history. What’s so cool about Robocop is that, like good Westerns, sci-fi films and dramas, the human connection is really important to a story well told.”
Will the new Robocop have shades of Short Circuit? Who knows – keep your eyes peeled – and freshen up on the original trilogy and the 2014 remake in anticipation!
