IRS Temporarily Suspends Contract With Equifax

Late Thursday night, the IRS announced that it has temporarily suspended an over $7 million contract with Equifax to help verify taxpayers’ identities when creating accounts on the agency’s website. The suspension will reportedly prevent taxpayers from creating new accounts through the IRS’s “Secure Access” program. Members of the Senate Banking Committee last week urged IRS Commissioner John Koskinen to kill the contract after Equifax recently suffered one of the worst data breaches in history. IRS spokesman Matthew Leas said in a statement this week, "The IRS emphasized that there is still no indication of any compromise of the limited IRS data shared under the contract. The contract suspension is being taken as a precautionary step as the IRS continues its review.”
