Corbyn kicks off UK election campaign, vowing to overturn ‘rigged system’

Euronews English - April 20, 2017

British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn kicked off the general election campaign on Thursday with a promise to beat the establishment, raise taxes on the wealthy and put power back in the hands of the people.

Opinion polls suggest Labour will lose heavily in the snap election on June the 8th.

But Corbyn called on voters to surprise the world once again.

“It is the Conservatives, the party of privilege and the richest, versus the Labour Party… It is the establishment versus the people and it is our historic duty to make sure that the people prevail,” he told party supporters in central London.

Playing to simmering public anger about stagnant wages and businesses that pay low taxes, Corbyn said he would scrap planned cuts to corporation tax and reverse tax breaks for wealthy individuals.

“Instead of the country’s wealth being hidden in tax havens, we will put it in the hand of the people,” he said.

Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May unexpectedly called the general election three years ahead of schedule in a bid to capitalise on Labour’s internal divisions and dwindling support.

She hopes to win a stronger majority as she negotiates the terms of Britain’s divorce from the EU.

“Now, it’s a very clear choice at this election.

It’s a choice between strong and stable leadership under the Conservatives or weak and unstable coalition of chaos led by (Labour leader) Jeremy Corbyn,” May said on Wednesday, after winning backing from the British parliament to hold the snap election.

While May tries to focus the debate on Brexit, Corbyn vowed to overturn a system he says is “rigged” in favour of the wealthy.

Offering voters a second referendum on a future Brexit deal is not in the cards right now, a spokesman said..
