A bushfire burning Christchurch’s Port Hills has been contained thanks to fire breaks, but authorities warned on February 17 that there’s still a risk of flare-ups. The Port Hills fires have destroyed at least 11 homes and 11 sheds since it began on Monday, according to the Christchurch City Council, but the full extent of the damage was not immediately known. Some residents have been allowed to return to their homes, the council said, and emergency services were moving from air-based to ground-based firefighting.
