Congress Approves Waiver for James Mattis as Defense Secretary

Wochit Headline News - Friday, 13 January 2017
The House voted to approve a waiver for retired Marine general James Mattis, clearing his appointment as the next Secretary of Defense. The Senate passed a similar vote the day before. In the House, a vote of 268-to-151 cleared the final procedure to bypass a law barring recently retired military officers from leading the Defense Department, and by proxy the Pentagon. Mattis retired in 2013, well within the seven-year requirement stipulated by law.
