As we’re heading into high summer, we’re having to fit air conditioning on board the One News Page time machine – but we’re always ready to take a jaunt or two back through the years to see what happened this time years, decades or centuries ago. Strap in, and let’s hit 88 mph to find out what the great annals of time have for us this week…

August 7th, 1914 – Lord Kitchener Posters Debut across the UK
You may not necessarily know the name, but you’ll know the face – Lord Kitchener’s famous armed forces recruitment poster, with the slogan ‘Your Country Needs You’, began its spread across the British Isles days after the outbreak of World War I.

August 8th 1995, – Coolio and LV Release ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’
One of the most identifiable and biggest-selling hits of the 90s, and arguably Coolio’s most recognizable hit to date, ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ debuted 22 years ago this week – and it’s still getting airplay to this day.

August 9th, 1974 – Nixon Out, Ford In
Controversial 37th President of the USA Richard Nixon bowed out of office today in 1974, allowing then Vice President Gerald Ford to swear the oath of office to take charge as Commander in Chief.

Momentous changes in the world abound – as the British first heard of America’s declaration to claim independence 241 years ago this week.

August 13th, 3114 BC – The Mayan Calendar Begins
We’re going back millennia for our last trip this week – as it is August 13th, 3114 days before the start of AD, when the Mayan calendar is thought to have started – at least the Lounsbury correlation states so. The Mayan calendar took on infamy in 2012 as this was the year that the world was predicted to end!

Stick around for more travelling in the One News Page time machine next week – and don’t forget to bring a packed lunch!
