Anyone who had a smartphone during the summer of 2016 will likely remember how much of a big deal Pokemon GO was, regardless of whether or not they actively took part in the augmented reality (AR) game. As it stands, the game still sees millions of users return to the game on a regular basis, with super-rare Pokemon available to catch on a more frequent basis. However, the game is hardly operating at its peak, which at the time was overseeing a colossal number of regular players logging in. However, developer Niantic are setting their sights on an equally popular franchise which could inspire a whole new series of mobile gamers – providing some of the lessons from the slow development of Pokemon GO are learned, of course!

It’s been announced that Niantic are working on building a game called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite – and yes, you read correctly ▶️ – that means you’ll be able to wander around, casting spells and finding characters and curiosities otherwise related to the multi-million selling series of novels authored by JK Rowling. The movies alone have grossed more than $7.7 billion worldwide – meaning that the thought of allowing fans to immerse themselves in an AR game based on the wizarding world could be an extremely lucrative move for Niantic Labs.

There’s no official release date on the cards just yet, but it is thought that the firm and Warner Bros are looking to launch the title at some point during next year. This could mean that it may tie in with the ongoing Fantastic Beasts franchise, with the next film in the run due for release this time next year. Rowling, of course, has always been open to expanding the Potter universe – to a colossal extent – so this move should come as a welcome surprise – albeit one that will likely sit comfortably alongside several other universe extensions already honored by Rowling herself.

Pokemon GO’s relative downturn in popularity after that huge boom in 2016 arguably came as a result of problems surrounding app functionality and a lack of trading and battle features, many of which fans were waiting for from the launch date. However, the game continues to be popular – but will Harry Potter GO replicate or even trounce that success? Let’s wait and see – get your wands ready for summer 2018, perhaps?
