Big deals all around us – and many of them, in fact, have been made by Disney, who famously swallowed up a number of huge entertainment properties in recent years to help bolster their empire – and it seems that another potential acquisition has been discussed by two firms to ensure that they can both fight against a rapidly-evolving media landscape. Social media, arguably, is changing the way that we entertain ourselves. Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube are all sapping precious time that would have been eaten up by TV and film – and with TV already feeling the pinch from both Amazon and Netflix – and with premium home access to current movies potentially being eyed by the latter – it’s hardly surprising that many firms and brands are considering merging in an attempt to really stamp their mark.
Though no deals are confirmed to have taken place, and while any details at all are rather shaky at this time, it’s thought that Disney and 21st Century Fox – owned by Rupert Murdoch – could be eyeing up a takeover of sorts. 21st Century Fox is largely a media and news network which was set up by the Murdoch family in response to the ceasing of News Corporation four years ago – and they have a huge array of assets which may be of serious interest to Disney. The brand is home to the FOX TV network and film studio – meaning that the House of Mouse could well seek to extend their entertainment reach even further, all the while acquiring a news network in the bargain.
It’s thought that the news of rumblings on such a potential deal has done very good things for Murdoch’s brand on the stock market, though any such deals taking place are far from having been formalized or even confirmed at this stage. There are sources claiming that a deal is in the works, and Wall Street has responded accordingly – but whether or not Disney will fully seize the brand remains to be seen.
Having acquired massive entertainment properties in Star Wars and Marvel, Disney became the hot cinematic property of 2016, having scored the four highest-grossing movies at the box office worldwide. They’re set to look for an even more fruitful holiday season, with Pixar’s Coco and Star Wars Episode VIII just around the corner.
